What's are the benefits of using a professional tax preparer?

  • Risk of Errors and Penalties: The U.S. tax code is complex and changes frequently. Misreporting income, claiming ineligible deductions or credits, or making simple math mistakes can result in a hefty tax bill, penalties, and interest charges from the IRS.  Entering tax information into a computer program and making adjustments necessary to clear the program’s diagnostic error messages is no substitute for understanding tax law. The Internal Revenue Code and related Treasury Regulations contain over 10,000 pages of complicated provisions. Working with a tax professional who understands how the provisions affect your specific situation and how the rules interact can provide you with the best result on your tax return. Obtaining tax benefits is often a complex process involving properly executed and timely-filed elections.  Simply entering amounts into an input program often leads to lost benefits. We find that in many cases we save new clients more than the cost of our services compared to returns they have prepared themselves.  Proper reporting and filing can also help keep you off the IRS radar.
  • Time-Consuming Process: Researching tax laws, gathering all necessary documents (W-2s, 1099s, receipts, etc.), and accurately preparing the return can take a significant amount of time. This time might be better spent on other endeavors, especially if your financial situation is complicated.
  • Missing Out on Deductions and Credits: CPAs are required to attend a significant amount of continuing professional education (CPE). Additionally, internal staff training is conducted throughout the year.  The benefit to our clients is that we stay current on all the latest tax laws and available tax breaks. A non-professional may miss out on valuable deductions or credits they qualify for, ultimately paying more in taxes than they should.
  • Lack of Professional Guidance and Support: When using DIY tax software, you may run into questions or complex situations where online help is insufficient. In addition to decades of tax law experience, we have tax research tools that go well beyond a web browser search.
  • Increased Stress and Burden: The responsibility for accuracy rests entirely on you. The stress of navigating the complex tax system and the potential repercussions of mistakes can be overwhelming, especially for those who are not "numbers people". Ultimately, while doing your own taxes can save on preparation fees, the potential costs in time, stress, and financial penalties may outweigh the initial savings, particularly for complex tax situations like owning a business or having various investment sources.
